The story of the Prophet Jesus (Peace Be Upon Him) in the Holy Quran.
In Islam, Jesus, known as Isa (peace be upon him), holds a special and revered status. Prophet Jesus, the son of Mary, was a messenger from God, miraculously born without a father. He was entrusted with a divine scripture called the Gospel (Injil) and foretold the coming of the final prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him). Considered one of the most important prophets, Jesus’s life was marked by miraculous events that underscored his extraordinary mission. Sent to guide the Children of Israel, Jesus reaffirmed God’s eternal message and directed people toward righteousness. Like other prophets, including Abraham, Moses, and Muhammad (peace be upon them all), Jesus conveyed the core divine message of worshiping one God and leading a life of compassion and submission to His will.
Birth and Annunciation
One day, Maryam (Mary) was in solitude in the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Suddenly, an unfamiliar figure appeared before her, causing her to feel afraid. She sought refuge in Allah.
The figure identified himself as Gabriel (Jibril), a messenger from Allah, sent to give her glad tidings of a great son. Mary was astonished and asked, “How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?” (Surah Maryam). Gabriel assured her that this was the will of Allah so that her son would be a miracle for the people and a sign of His power. Then, he blew into her, and Mary conceived Jesus by Allah’s command.
God Said to Mohammed, Peace be upon Him, in Surah Maryam Verses 16 to 21
“And mention, in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east. And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man. She said, ‘Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah.’ He said, ‘I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy.’ She said, ‘How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?’ He said, ‘Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, “It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.”
And God Said in Surah Al-Imran Verses 45 to 47
“when the angels said, ‘O Mary, indeed Allah gives you good tidings of a word from Him, whose name will be the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary – distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near [to Allah]. He will speak to the people in the cradle and in maturity and will be of the righteous.’ She said, ‘My Lord, how will I have a child when no man has touched me?’ [The angel] said, ‘Such is Allah; He creates what He wills. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it, “Be,” and it is.’
The Miraculous Birth
As Mary’s pregnancy progressed, she felt fear and distress, aware of the potential judgment from society. Zechariah (Zakariya), noticing her condition, inquired about the miraculous event. Mary explained, and Zechariah, recognizing her purity, believed her. When the time for childbirth approached, Mary left the city and took refuge under a palm tree. In her moment of need, a divine voice reassured her. A spring of water appeared at her feet, quenching her thirst, and dates fell from the tree, providing nourishment. This divine provision underscored the significance of Jesus’ birth and God’s protection over them.
The Infant Jesus Speaks
After giving birth, Mary returned to her people with the baby, facing accusations of unchastity. In response, Mary remained silent and pointed to the infant Jesus. By the will of Allah, baby Jesus spoke from the cradle, declaring, “Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet. And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive. And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant. And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive” (Surah Maryam). This miraculous speech served as a testament to Jesus’ extraordinary nature and divine mission.
Prophethood and Miracles of Jesus
As Jesus grew, he began his mission among the Israelites, affirming his role as a messenger from Allah. By God’s permission, he performed numerous miracles, such as healing the blind and the leper, raising the dead, and creating a bird from clay that came to life. Jesus proclaimed, “And [make him] a messenger to the Children of Israel, [who will say], ‘Indeed I have come to you with a sign from your Lord in that I design for you from clay [that which is] like the form of a bird, then I breathe into it and it becomes a bird by permission of Allah. And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead – by permission of Allah. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers'” (Surah Al-Imran).
The Heavenly Table
The disciples of Jesus, known as the Hawariyyun, asked him to bring down a table spread with food from heaven after fasting for thirty days. Despite his concerns about their gratitude, they insisted. Jesus prayed to Allah, saying, “O Allah, our Lord, send down to us a table [spread with food] from the heaven to be for us a festival for the first of us and the last of us and a sign from You. And provide for us, and You are the best of providers” (Surah Al-Ma’idah).
A table descended from heaven, filled with delicious food and drink. Thousands of people, both rich and poor, ate from it, and the day of its descent became a long-celebrated festival for the disciples and followers of Jesus.
The Ascension of Jesus
As Jesus’ message spread, some Israelites grew increasingly hostile and plotted to kill him. Allah revealed their plan to Jesus and assured him of His protection. “Mention when Allah said,
‘O Jesus, indeed I will take you and raise you to Myself'”
(Surah Al-Imran).
Allah raised Jesus to Himself, and he was neither killed nor crucified as some believed. Instead, Allah raised him in His power, “And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them”
(Surah An-Nisa).
